Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper is a heartfelt book, that takes you into Melody’s world immediately.
11 year old Melody is one of the smartest people in her school, but can’t show it. Melody is one of the kindest people in her school, but can’t show it. If you haven’t already guessed Melody has cerebral palsy, which means she is stuck in a pink wheelchair, and can’t talk. But, even though she can’t talk she definitely has personality to show. Sharon Draper shows exactly what’s on Melody’s mind. For instance: “By the way, there is nothing cute about a pink wheelchair. Pink doesn’t change a thing.” Sharon Draper makes you want to go inside the book and be Melody’s best friend. But, when she gets an assistant to help her at school, named Catherine, she finally can show how smart she is. Then things get crazier, Catherine helps Melody get a voice. But not many people want to hear it.
I would recommend this book to 4th through 7th grade. It is one of my favorites!
