Warcross by Marie Lu

Warcross is only one of the amazing books by Marie Lu. Warcross is a video game that’s a lot like capture the flag. The main character, Emika Chen is a hacker who works as a bounty hunter for illegal criminal activity in the dark world. After failing to get a bounty, she hacks into one of the biggest Warcross games in the world. She immediately gets caught and is in the news for days. She keeps on getting mysterious phone calls from the CEO and creator of Warcross, Hideo Tanaka. She finally accepts the phone call and gets hired to do a job she can’t resist saying no to. He flies her to Tokyo and she gets drafted into one of the top Warcross teams. But why? She finds that not everything is as perfect as it seems, especially in Tokyo, Japan.

I absolutely loved the book, 5/5 stars (if I could give more I would!). My favorite part is when she gets caught and banned from the Warcross game in the very beginning, I like when she just stares at nothing in awe as she listens to Hideo Tanaka’s proposition on the phone. I see myself in Emika’s personality and how she talks to people. She and I are very “straight to the point” type of people and I like that the book gives me that sense. My favorite characters are probably Emika and Hideo. I enjoy reading about Emika because she seems real. Not like some random perfect character from a fairy tale. She seems like you can relate to her. I enjoy when the author, Marie Lu, puts Hideo into play because he’s so much more than he gives off in their first meeting where he says, “decent,” as he observes Emika’s abilities.

I would recommend any middle schooler to try this book. If you like Hunger Games, Divergent or the Legend Trilogy, you won’t be disappointed. I think you will like this book because it is so amazingly written and the action is so intense. You will especially love reading this book if you are an avid science fiction lover/reader!
